From Epic Journeys to Sustainable Adventures: The SUP World Stirs
Welcome to the August 2025 edition of our SUP round-up! This month, we dive into remarkable journeys and sustainability efforts that make waves in the stand-up paddleboarding community.
Charlie Head's Bold Vortex Crossing
British endurance paddler Charlie Head has taken on the monumental task of completing a solo paddle known as the Vortex Crossing. Initially setting out to traverse approximately 150–180 km across open sea to the Faroe Islands, Charlie quickly faced a natural setback. Severe weather conditions forced him to pivot his plans, leading him to attempt a solo, unsupported paddleboard journey from Lerwick in the Shetland Islands to Sanday Island in Orkney—a route believed to be a world first at 117 km long.
Charlie is not just paddling for personal achievement. He is leveraging his journey to raise awareness for vital causes. Supporting initiatives like Sea Shepherd Global and Dare2Express, he underscores the relationship between endurance challenges and environmental protection and mental health advocacy. In doing so, he highlights how each paddle stroke extends beyond water, making ripples in the world.
David Haze's Eco-Friendly Coastal Exploration
Paddleboarder David Haze is reshaping the narrative of adventure travel with his eco-conscious approach! This August, he set out to explore Dorset’s gorgeous coastline solely by public transport, demonstrating the ease and accessibility of leisure without a car. Armed with a foldable inflatable SUP that fits neatly into a backpack, Haze visited famous spots such as Sandbanks and Bournemouth Pier but also ventured into quieter corners like Christchurch and Poole.
As part of his journey, David collaborated with Morebus to champion public transport for leisure activities, showing that enjoying nature doesn’t have to harm it. With the Morebus app aiding his route planning and tracking carbon savings, David’s mission is as much about fun as it is about sustainability—encouraging others to reconsider their travel methods and their impact on the environment.
Joining the Wave of the Future
As paddleboarding continues to gain traction, events like the GWA Wingfoil World Tour have emerged, showcasing new competitive formats and highlighting the community's expanding scope. The integration of wing foiling with traditional paddleboarding signifies a growing trend toward versatile water sports, attracting more enthusiasts. This blend of sports not only diversifies our oceanic activities but catalyzes interactions across different water sport communities.
Future Adventures Await
The stories from August reflect a vibrant and dynamic community that prioritizes sustainability, adventure, and health. The mix of thrill-seeking expeditions and responsible exploration illustrates a profound respect for our oceans and the ecosystems they sustain. As Charlie and David have shown us, every adventure is an opportunity to advocate for something bigger, whether it's ocean conservation or promoting accessibility in water sports.
Join in these exciting narratives! Whether by paddling through challenging waters or exploring coastlines sustainably, the stand-up paddleboarding community is an inclusive space inviting all to enjoy nature and promote its protection.
