The Spirit of the GlaGla Race: A Winter SUP Revolution
The GlaGla Race, a unique gathering for paddleboarding enthusiasts, is set to embrace a new chapter in 2026, as it steps into what is being referred to as "Pirate Mode." While the traditional race takes a break for a major refresh anticipated in 2027, founder Benoit Mouren is inviting paddlers from all corners of Europe to join the GlaGla Race FreeStyle, a decentralized movement that emphasizes community, freedom, and connection.
What is the GlaGla Race?
For more than a decade, the GlaGla Race has become synonymous with winter paddling. Held in the scenic embrace of Lake Annecy, where temperatures can plunge to just 4°C, it draws hundreds of adventurers from more than twenty nations, all united by a love for cold water paddling. This year, participants are being encouraged to paddle at their own locations and share their experiences digitally — making the adventure accessible to everyone.
Paddling in Pirate Mode: How to Participate
On January 17th and 18th, participants can partake in their individual adventures, choosing between three iconic distances: 3 km for those new to winter paddling, 6.5 km for returning veterans, and a challenging 14.5 km for the hardened cold-water enthusiasts. A key moment in the event will occur at 10:30 AM (CET) on January 17, echoing the traditional starting point in Annecy. Participants are encouraged to share their journeys under the hashtag #GlaGlaFreeStyle, allowing the spirit of the GlaGla Community to spread beyond physical boundaries.
Safety First: Preparing for Winter Adventures
Winter paddling offers a magical experience, but it requires careful preparation. The organizers stress essential safety measures: wearing thermal protection such as a drysuit or thick wetsuit, utilizing safety gear including a leash and buoyancy aid, and ensuring safety through the “Never Alone” rule, advocating for paddling with a partner in cold conditions. Such precautions enable paddlers to fully immerse themselves in the joy of the sport while minimizing risks.
The Future of GlaGla: Community and Sustainability
Looking ahead to 2027, major changes are underway for the GlaGla Race. The event aims to spotlight SUP Health & Wellness, inclusivity, and sustainable practices, ensuring that the spirit of paddling continues while embracing environmental awareness and community support. Joining the GlaGla Race Friends community now offers participants a chance to contribute to this gear-shifting journey, engaging with one another and forging connections that extend beyond the race.
The GlaGla Race FreeStyle 2026 serves as more than just an event; it represents the essence of what it means to be part of the paddleboarding community. It embraces those who seek adventure no matter the season and reminds us that the best captains are often those who sail with friends and shared passions. By participating or engaging with the GlaGla community today, you’re not just taking part in a race but becoming part of a legacy.
